Melbourne Village Election Canceled, New Commissioners Named

Melbourne Village will not hold a municipal election in November because the number of candidates matches the available seats. Mayor-Elect Bridget Foster, Commissioner Valerie Calenda, Commissioner Betty Jo Yorio, and new Commissioners-elect John Morrison and Graham Foster will officially take their positions at the November Commission Meeting.

These officials will guide Melbourne Village's progress, addressing resident needs and future planning.

The announcement followed a Mayor's report on Aug. 25, 2026, which also included reminders about hurricane season preparedness and school zone driving safety. Residents recently received proposed property tax notices. Many local governments are increasing millage rates due to general expenses and preparing for potential property tax amendment impacts.

The Town Commission's proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year adds to town reserves, preparing for unforeseen expenses and infrastructure needs. It also proposes lowering the millage rate to 6.419, the suggested roll-back rate. Two budget workshops and two public hearings were scheduled for September to finalize the budget.

A Special Magistrate Code Enforcement Hearing on Aug. 14, 2026, addressed two long-standing issues. The Special Magistrate found the town's complaints supported by evidence, requiring respondents to comply within a stated timeframe to avoid further legal action and fines. The orders are available for public review.

The outgoing mayor hosted a final Mayor’s Town Hall on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026, at 10 a.m. in the Town Hall, offering an informal discussion and Q&A session for residents.
