Merced County Housing Plan Approved for State Grants

State approves Merced County housing plan, opening grant funding

The California Department of Housing and Community Development approved Merced County's 2024-2032 Housing Element on Tuesday, clearing the way for the county to compete for state and federal grants for housing and infrastructure projects.

The Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the plan May 19. The Housing Element documents existing and projected housing needs across all income levels and confirms the county has zoned sufficient land to meet state-set growth targets. State law requires local governments to update housing plans every eight years.

Without an approved Housing Element, counties lose access to competitive funding programs and face restrictions on certain development types. The certification strengthens Merced County's position when applying for grants that fund housing construction, road improvements, water systems, and other community projects.

"This approval reflects the tremendous work of County staff, our community partners, and residents who participated throughout the planning process," said Board Chairman Daron McDaniel.

County staff will monitor progress toward meeting regional housing needs over the next eight years.
