A Rip Current Statement and High Surf Advisory are in effect for coastal Bryan, Chatham, Liberty, McIntosh, Beaufort, Coastal Colleton, Charleston, and Coastal Jasper counties through this evening, with dangerous rip currents and large waves expected.
Residents and visitors in coastal Bryan, Chatham, Liberty, McIntosh, Beaufort, Coastal Colleton, Charleston, and Coastal Jasper counties are advised of a Rip Current Statement and High Surf Advisory issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston SC.
A High Rip Current Risk is in effect through this evening, October 6th, 2026. Dangerous rip currents are expected in all affected coastal areas. Additionally, a High Surf Advisory is in place from noon today until 2 PM EDT Wednesday. Large breaking waves of 4 to 6 feet are expected in the South Carolina surf zone, and 5 to 7 feet in the Georgia surf zone. These conditions will create dangerous swimming and surfing opportunities and localized beach erosion.
The NWS warns that inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to the dangerous surf conditions. If you choose to swim, do so near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
