Tool Libraries, Condors, and Other Useful Proof That People Can Fix Things

Public libraries are lending drills, diaper banks are filling a gap federal programs ignore, and conservation teams have pushed California condors past a major population mark. Engineers are also turning canals into power plants, because apparently roofs had to share the workload.

Today’s good news comes with fewer speeches and more useful equipment. People are lending what their neighbors need, treating endangered birds, and building practical solutions that save money and resources.

Libraries add drills to the checkout desk. Public libraries across the country have expanded “Library of Things” programs, allowing cardholders to borrow tools, sewing machines, cake pans, and even energy meters. Library staff often lend repair manuals with the equipment, which matters when someone brings home a stud finder and immediately points it at the refrigerator. Borrowers save money, learn a skill, and return an item that might otherwise sit unused for 363 days a year. I support this expansion without hesitation. A library card should help people fix a chair, hem a curtain, or bake a birthday cake, not only find a mystery novel.

Diaper banks keep families supplied. Diaper banks and mutual-aid groups across the United States distribute millions of diapers each year through food pantries, clinics, shelters, and social-service agencies. Congress still excludes diapers from SNAP and WIC, so families cannot use those benefits for a basic item that infants need several times a day. Volunteers sort boxes by size, build take-home bundles, and connect parents with formula and childcare referrals.
