Your Phone Is Not Your Bedmate

Three uncomfortable questions about sleep, resentment, and the gym habits that quietly run your life. None of the answers involve buying a $ ninety supplement.

Question: I’m 38, married, have two kids, and I keep staying up until 1 a.m. watching videos I don’t even like. Then I’m wrecked at work and short with everyone. I tell myself it’s the only time that’s “mine,” but honestly I’m watching a man explain abandoned malls while my wife sleeps next to me. What is wrong with me?

Answer: Probably nothing is “wrong” with you. You’re stealing back unscheduled time because your day feels owned by everyone else. That part makes sense. But the abandoned-mall guy is not your therapist, and three hours of low-grade screen trance is not freedom. It’s avoidance with a charger.

The fix is not a dramatic digital detox where you throw your phone into a lake and become the kind of person who owns linen. Set a hard “closing time” for the day—start with 30 minutes earlier than usual—and put the phone somewhere inconvenient. Then use that time for something that actually feels like yours: a shower, a book, music, stretching, talking to your wife, or sitting in silence like a haunted Victorian child. Sleep loss makes emotional control and decision-making worse, so this is health maintenance, not moral purity.

Question: My wife says she carries the whole household mentally. I do chores when asked, but she says having to ask is the problem. I think she’s exaggerating because I’m not sitting around eating chips while she works. How do I know if I’m being unfair or if she’s just mad at me?

Answer: If you need a manager to assign you your own family responsibilities, yeah, that’s on you. “I do what I’m asked” is not a defense; it’s a job description for an employee.

Pick two recurring areas and own them completely—not just the visible labor. If you own school mornings, you know the forms, clothing, lunches, and calendar. If you own groceries, you notice the milk before somebody announces its tragic disappearance. Don’t present your wife with a weekly PowerPoint titled “Look, I helped.” Just become reliably responsible. The resentment may not vanish overnight, but you’ll stop feeding it.

Question: I keep joining a gym, going hard for two weeks, getting sore, missing one day, then disappearing for a month. I’m embarrassed because I know exactly what to do. Is this laziness?

Answer: Sometimes. But more often it’s an all-or-nothing plan designed by your inner idiot. You don’t need punishment; you need a minimum you can repeat. Three 25-minute sessions a week counts. On bad days, walk, do a few basic strength movements, and leave. Consistency is built from unimpressive appointments kept over and over.

Your one step:** Tonight, put your phone on charge outside the bedroom and write tomorrow’s 25-minute workout on paper.
