DES MOINES, IA – Drivers in Northern Iowa are advised to use low beam headlights this morning due to areas of fog causing reduced visibility. A Special Weather Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Des Moines warns of visibilities around or under a mile.
The affected counties include Emmet, Kossuth, Winnebago, Worth, Palo Alto, Hancock, Cerro Gordo, Pocahontas, Humboldt, Wright, Franklin, Butler, and Bremer. This statement is effective immediately, starting at 4:29 AM CDT, and is expected to expire at 9:00 AM CDT today, September 28, 2026.
The NWS advises that motorists should be alert for sudden changes in visibility while traveling. The primary impact is the potential for significantly reduced sightlines, which can make driving hazardous. To ensure safety, all drivers are urged to turn on their low beam headlights to increase their own visibility to others and to better see the road ahead.
