Lanesboro, Minnesota: The Bike Trail Town That Forgot to Be Boring

Follow the Root River into southeastern Minnesota for limestone bluffs, a walkable main street, and a breakfast plate that justifies the entire drive. Lanesboro is small enough to understand in one afternoon and strange enough to keep you poking around until dinner.

Take U.S. 52 south from Rochester, then turn onto the two-lane roads that lead into the Root River valley. The drive gets better when the fields start giving way to bluffs and the GPS begins announcing turns you absolutely do not remember making. That is the correct direction.

In Lanesboro, park in the free public lot near the Root River State Trail access on Parkway Avenue. From there, you can walk almost everywhere: downtown shops, the river, the historic theater, and the trail itself. Do not waste time circling for a “better” parking spot. This is a town where five extra steps counts as a scenic stroll.

Start at Pedal Pushers Cafe and order the biscuits and gravy with eggs. It is the kind of breakfast that arrives looking like it has been preparing for winter. If you are there later, get a burger and a local beer instead. The restaurant is bike-friendly without making non-cyclists feel like they showed up at the wrong meeting.

After breakfast, rent a bike or walk a section of the Root River State Trail. The trail follows an old railroad grade, so it is pleasantly flat, even when the surrounding bluffs are showing off. In autumn, the maples turn the valley loud with color. In spring, the river runs fast and the town feels freshly rinsed. Summer weekends are busier, but early morning remains wonderfully quiet.

Here is the surprise: Lanesboro has a serious theater scene. The Commonweal Theatre stages full productions in a compact downtown building, and the quality is far above what you expect from a town this size. Check the schedule before you go and make the show your evening plan. You can spend the afternoon outdoors, eat dinner downtown, then walk into a polished performance without ever moving the car.

Stay one night if you can. The valley gets properly dark after dinner, and the bluffs look entirely different under a sky without much competition from streetlights. Bring a jacket, even in July, and do not trust anyone who says one day is enough. They are either lying or have not tried the pie.
