Residents across the San Joaquin Valley, Sierra Nevada Foothills, and Coastal West Hills are advised to take precautions against extreme heat. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Hanford has issued a Heat Advisory effective immediately, October 5, 2026, at 10:15 AM PDT, and continuing until Friday, October 9, 2026, at 10:00 PM PDT.

High temperatures up to 102 degrees are expected. Overnight lows between 70 and 75 degrees are forecast, particularly in the Sierra Foothills where the thermal belt is strongest. This prolonged heat poses a moderate to major risk of heat-related illnesses for much of the population, especially those without effective cooling or hydration.

Affected areas include the West Side Mountains north and south of 198, Los Banos - Dos Palos, Merced - Madera - Mendota, Planada - Le Grand - Snelling, Coalinga - Avenal, West Side of Fresno and Kings Counties, Caruthers - San Joaquin - Selma, Fresno-Clovis, Buttonwillow - Lost Hills - I5, Delano-Wasco-Shafter, Hanford - Corcoran - Lemoore, Visalia - Porterville - Reedley, Buena Vista, Bakersfield, Southeast San Joaquin Valley, South End San Joaquin Valley, Mariposa Madera Foothills, Mariposa-Madera Lower Sierra, Fresno-Tulare Foothills, Fresno-Tulare Lower Sierra, South End Sierra Foothills, and the South End of the Lower Sierra.

To stay safe, the NWS advises drinking plenty of fluids, staying in an air-conditioned room, staying out of the sun, and checking on relatives and neighbors. This advisory will expire on October 9, 2026, at 10:00 PM PDT.
