Strong Storms Approach: 50 MPH Winds, Hail Expected in Knox, Bell, Harlan, Clay, Leslie Counties
A Special Weather Statement has been issued by NWS Jackson, KY, for Knox, Bell, Harlan, Clay, and Leslie counties, warning of strong thunderstorms with 50 mph wind gusts and pea-sized hail until 12:00 AM EDT on September 22.
Residents in Knox, Bell, Harlan, Clay, and Leslie counties should consider seeking shelter indoors as strong thunderstorms are approaching. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, KY, issued a Special Weather Statement at 11:27 PM EDT on September 21, effective until 12:00 AM EDT on September 22.
Doppler radar at 11:26 PM EDT indicated a line of strong thunderstorms moving east at 20 mph. These storms extend from Erose to Stony Fork Junction to Hutch to 7 miles south of Pruden.
Expected hazards include wind gusts up to 50 mph and pea-sized hail. The NWS warns that gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is also possible.
Areas specifically impacted include Harlan, Pineville, Middlesboro, Loyall, Wallins Creek, Sandy Fork, Bledsoe, Mary Alice, Varilla, Coldiron, Ponza, Salt Gum, Beverly, Black Snake, Saylor, Erose, Elcomb, Binghamtown, Cubage, and Rella. This also includes U.S. Highway 25 East in Bell County between mile markers 1 and 13.
Torrential rainfall is also occurring with these storms, which may lead to localized flooding. Drivers are advised not to drive vehicles through flooded roadways.
