Strong Thunderstorm Threatens Northeast Georgia: Seek Shelter Now

Residents in Jackson, Madison, Clarke, Oconee, and Oglethorpe counties should seek immediate shelter due to a strong thunderstorm. The National Weather Service (NWS) Peachtree City GA issued a Special Weather Statement today, September 20, 2026, at 5:48 PM EDT, effective until 6:15 PM EDT.

A strong thunderstorm was located near Diamond Hill, or Danielsville, moving south at 15 mph. Hazards include winds up to 40 mph, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, and heavy rain. The NWS confirms this information via radar.

Expect minor damage to tree limbs and unsecured objects to be blown around. Heavy rain could cause temporary street flooding, especially in areas with poor drainage. Locations impacted include Watkinsville, Danielsville, Athens, Nicholson, Winterville, Crawford, and other surrounding areas.

People outdoors must seek shelter immediately. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Motorists should slow down and be prepared for potential loss of control due to hydroplaning.
