Salem High Sophomore Reads Poem at AAPI Heritage Month

Staff Writer
June 11, 2026

Salem High School sophomore Liana Galvan recited an original poem at the city's Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month flag raising ceremony on May 1.

Galvan, the Salem Youth Poet Laureate, performed "My First Flag Raising" at the event. Her parents are from the Philippines.

The Salem School District named Galvan Youth Poet Laureate last summer. The position recognizes young writers who demonstrate exceptional talent and commitment to their craft. Galvan's appointment reflects the district's practice of including student voices in civic and cultural events.
