The Hillsborough County School Board directs the organization and operation of the district's public schools. It sets policies for the school system's effective functioning and improvement, affecting students, educators and families throughout the county.
As a public corporate entity, the school board takes official action only during public sessions when a quorum is present. Individual board members act officially only as part of the board in these sessions unless the board grants specific authorization.
Each year, the board elects a chair and vice-chair at its organizational meeting, held on the third Tuesday after the first Monday in November. The chair presides over meetings, appoints committees and performs other duties. The vice-chair assumes these responsibilities when the chair is absent.
Community members can stay informed by attending or watching school board meetings. They air live Tuesdays at 4 p.m. on Hillsborough Schools TV, Spectrum Cable channel 635 and Frontier channel 32. Replays are available Sundays at 10 a.m. for board meetings and 8 p.m. for recognition meetings. Live broadcasts and replays include closed captioning. Video archives of meetings date back to Oct. 28, 2014, with online indexing available for meetings since July 2012, allowing viewers to navigate to specific agenda items.
