Tropical Storm Watch Issued for George County, Prepare for Significant Wind
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for George County, including Lucedale, urging residents to prepare for significant wind, moderate flooding, and potential tornadoes, according to the NWS Mobile AL.
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for George County, including Lucedale, as of 4:14 AM CDT today, October 8, by the National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile AL. Residents are advised to act now to complete preparations for significant wind impacts, with potential for winds of 58 to 73 mph.
Efforts to protect life and property should be underway. Plan for dangerous wind of equivalent strong tropical storm force. Potential impacts include damage to roofing, siding, porches, and sheds, as well as mobile homes. Expect several large trees to be snapped or uprooted, leading to impassable roads and scattered power outages. Peak wind forecasts are 15-25 mph with gusts to 35 mph, but the threat includes higher winds due to forecast uncertainty.
Moderate flooding rain is also anticipated, with 3-6 inches of rain and locally higher amounts. This could lead to evacuations, rescues, swollen rivers, and localized flooding of structures and roadways. Consider protective actions if you are in an area vulnerable to flooding. Heed any flood watches and warnings.
There is also a potential for a few tornadoes. If your shelter is vulnerable, prepare to relocate to a safe shelter before hazardous weather arrives. If a tornado warning is issued, be ready to shelter quickly.
There is little to no threat of storm surge inundation. For local information, contact George County EMA at 601-947-7557 or visit www.facebook.com/GeorgeCountyMsEmergencyManagement.
