Summer in the Square Returns June 8 with 300+ Hours of Free Programming

"Presented by the City of Cedar Rapids, Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust, ImOn Communications, TrueNorth Companies, and UFG Insurance, Summer in the Square returns June 8 through August 14, transforming Greene Square into downtown Cedar Rapids' summer gathering place.   Hosted by Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation, the annual series offers free weekday activities for all ages, including games, art, fitness, family events, food trucks, and more. Thursday evenings feature live music and entertainment through Weekend Rehearsal, while special events throughout the summer create even more opportunities for residents and visitors to connect, play, and celebrate community.   Whether you are bringing the family, meeting friends after work, grabbing lunch from a food truck, or enjoying a night of live music under the trees, Summer in the Square offers something new to discover all season long.   "Strong communities are built through shared experiences, and Summer in the Square creates opportunities for those moments all summer long," said Carrie Mardorf, Parks & Recreation Director. "Whether someone joins us for a concert, a family activity, lunch with coworkers, or a fitness class, Greene Square becomes a place where people can gather, connect, and enjoy being part of the Cedar Rapids community."   The 2026 season includes more than 300 hours of programming and more than 130 activities and events throughout the summer. Weekly offerings include Game On: Greene Square, Sports in the Square, Picasso in the Park, Family NERF Night, Golf Greene Square, Move in the Square, Seniors in the Square, Rollin' Rec Signature Stops, Food Truck Fridays, and Live Beats, Local Eats.   Special events throughout the season include Weekend Rehearsal, Ice Cream Socials, Rev Up the Square, Picnic in the Park, Christmas in July, and Back 2 School Bash.   Summer in the Square is expected to welcome approximately 7,500 participants throughout the season and continues to create opportunities for recreation, wellness, arts, entertainment, and community connection in downtown Cedar Rapids.   Most activities are free and open to the public.   Visit CityofCR.com/SummerInTheSquare to review the complete schedule, event details, and program information."

Free Family Fun Comes to Resident Appreciation Day June 6

"Families can look forward to a morning full of hands-on-fun, exploration, and surprises as Resident Appreciation Day, hosted by the City of Cedar Rapids, returns to the Downtown Farmers Market on Saturday, June 6. From 7:30 a.m. to noon, Greene Square will be packed with free activities and engaging ways to experience city services up close. Kids can climb aboard a fire engine, city bus, art-wrapped garbage truck, the Rollin’ Rec Mobile, the Block n’ Roll block party trailer, and more. Games, prizes, and giveaways will be available throughout the event. The Parks and Recreation Department will offer chances to win swim and golf passes for the rest of the 2026 season, and the welcome table will hand out free “Welcome is Our Language” t-shirts while supplies last. City staff will host activities and displays including an inflatable obstacle course, roundabout information and playmat, the latest Water Quality Report, City Manager’s 1-Bag Challenge kits, and children’s fingerprinting by Police Department volunteer corps members.
