A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Lowndes County, effective immediately, with hazardous winds up to 45 mph and moderate flooding expected. Residents must complete preparations now.
LOWNDES COUNTY – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, MS, has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for Lowndes County, effective immediately as of October 9 at 10:31 PM CDT. Residents must act now to complete preparations for hazardous winds and potential moderate flooding.
Wind speeds are forecasted to reach 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, with a potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Damage to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes is possible. Expect large tree limbs to break, and some trees may snap or uproot, leading to a few impassable roads from debris and hazardous driving conditions on elevated roadways. Scattered power and communication outages are also anticipated. Efforts to protect property should be underway.
A Flood Watch is also in effect. Additional rainfall of 1-3 inches, with locally higher amounts, is expected, posing a significant threat for moderate flooding. This could lead to several evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may become swollen, overflowing banks in vulnerable areas. Small streams, creeks, canals, and ditches are expected to overflow. Floodwaters could enter some structures, and several areas may experience rapid inundation at underpasses and low-lying spots. Heed all flood watches and warnings.
The NWS indicates the situation is unfavorable for tornadoes, with little to no impacts expected from them at this time. The Tropical Storm Warning is set to expire on October 10 at 6:45 AM UTC. Stay informed of the latest forecasts.
