OM Backroads: Ep. 121. The War Club at Big Bottom

2026-09-1416:26

Hello and Welcome to another episode of Ohio Mysteries Backroads. What lurks in the shadows of Ohio’s backroads, forgotten cemeteries, and hidden corners of history? Join us as we uncover the Buckeye State’s most chilling legends, mysterious sightings, and enduring folklore. On a freezing Sunday night—January 2, 1791—along the icy banks of the Muskingum River in present-day Morgan County, a quiet settlement sat unfinished and unwarned. Deep in the woods north of Marietta, a small group of pioneer squatters had built an incomplete wooden blockhouse on the fertile floodplains known as "Big Bottom". They believed they were carving out a new future on the Ohio frontier. But they were on contested ground—territory the Indigenous Lenape and Wyandot nations were fiercely defending against relentless westward encroachment. As the settlers gathered around the fire for supper, the silence of the winter night was shattered. Within minutes, an attack carried out with sudden speed and ferocity left the blockhouse in flames. Twelve settlers were killed, several were taken captive into the wilderness, and a handful barely escaped into the frozen dark. Left behind in the ashes was a single, ominous artifact: a war club laid upon the ground—a formal, tragic declaration of war. The attack at Big Bottom didn't just shock the Ohio Company of Associates; it ignited four brutal years of bloodshed known as the Northwest Indian War, changing the course of American and Native history forever. Join us on this episode of Ohio Mysteries as we delve into the tensions, the forgotten survivors, and the ghost of a winter night that set the entire Ohio frontier ablaze. Listen now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. OM Backroads: Ep. 120: The daring train robbery of Garretsville, Ohio by Alvin "Creepy" Karpis

2026-09-0716:29

Hello and Welcome to another episode of Ohio Mysteries Backroads. What lurks in the shadows of Ohio’s backroads, forgotten cemeteries, and hidden corners of history? Join us as we uncover the Buckeye State’s most chilling legends, mysterious sightings, and enduring folklore. Ohio Mysteries Backroads: The Garrettsville Train Robbery — Alvin Karpis Comes to Ohio In the quiet countryside of Portage County, Ohio, the village of Garrettsville seems like an unlikely setting for one of America’s most notorious criminals. But during the violent era of the Great Depression, the backroads of Ohio became part of the story of Alvin “Creepy” Karpis, one of the FBI’s most wanted gangsters and a key figure in the infamous Barker-Karpis gang. In this episode of Ohio Mysteries Backroads, we travel back to the days when armored trains, bank robbers, gangsters, and federal agents were locked in a nationwide battle. Our story takes us to Garrettsville, Ohio, where a train robbery brought the national crime wave of the 1930s frighteningly close to home. We explore what happened, how Karpis and his associates operated, and why Ohio's rail lines and isolated rural communities could become attractive targets for Depression-era criminals. We'll look at the world that produced Karpis—the desperate economic conditions, the rise of organized crime, the getaway routes, and the growing presence of J. Edgar Hoover's FBI. We'll also separate the documented history from the legends that have grown around the robbery over the decades. Who was Alvin Karpis? Why did his gang come to Ohio? What happened along the railroad near Garrettsville? And how did law enforcement eventually close the net around one of America's most elusive gangsters? Join Ohio Mysteries Backroads as we leave the highways and take a trip down the old railroad tracks into the dangerous world of 1930s Ohio, where a seemingly peaceful town found itself caught in the crosshairs of America's gangster era. This is the Garrettsville train robbery—and the Ohio connection to Alvin Karpis. Blending local history, eyewitness accounts, folklore, and a healthy dose of skepticism, this podcast explores the legends that refuse to die. Join us as we uncover the Buckeye State’s most chilling legends, mysterious sightings, and enduring folklore. Marblehead Lighthouse: The Guardian of Lake Erie Perched on the rocky shores of Lake Erie, the Marblehead Lighthouse has stood watch over Ohio’s dangerous western basin for nearly two centuries. In this episode of Ohio Mysteries Backroads, we travel to the Marblehead Peninsula to explore the history, legends, shipwrecks, keepers, and stories surrounding one of Ohio’s most recognizable landmarks. Built in 1822, Marblehead Lighthouse is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the Great Lakes. For generations, its beacon has guided ships safely around the rocky Marblehead Peninsula and toward the harbors of Lake Erie. But behind that familiar tower is a fascinating history filled with storms, treacherous waters, lighthouse keepers, and the ever-present danger of the lake. We’ll look at why the lighthouse was built, what life was like for the keepers and their families, and how the technology of the light changed over the years. We’ll also explore some of the dramatic storms and maritime disasters that occurred in the waters surrounding Marblehead—and the stories of the men and women who kept the light burning when Lake Erie turned violent. From the lonely life of a lighthouse keeper to the ships battling darkness, fog, ice, and massive waves, the Marblehead Lighthouse is more than a beautiful landmark. It is a reminder of the dangerous relationship between Ohio and the Great Lakes. OM Backroads: Ep. 115. "Wells Waite Miller and Me. An 8th OVI Civil War Biography", our interview with author Kelly Boyer Sagert

2026-08-0932:26

Hello and Welcome to another episode of Ohio Mysteries Backroads. In tonight's episode we talk with author Kelly Boyer Sagert about her award winning book entitled: "Wells Waite Miller and Me. An 8th OVI Civil War biography". Her fantastic book chronicles the life of the Civil War veteran Wells Waite Miller and his heroic efforts to help the Union win the war. On July 3, 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg, twenty-one-year-old Captain Wells Waite Miller of the 8th Ohio Voluntary Infantry fought in the bloody heat of Pickett’s Charge as dying men fell all around him. Ultimately, though, his “bruised and undersized regiment” played a crucial role in the Union victory. Chosen to lead an outpost about one hundred yards away from the main Union line, against seemingly insurmountable odds, Miller and 150 courageous men faced down six thousand desperate Rebels. Fighting valiantly, they “broke an entire . . . brigade of the Army of Northern Virginia.” Miller nearly died from his wounds, and this book reconstructs and celebrates the life of this forgotten Civil War hero—and the incredible synchronicities that exist between his life story and that of the author. The book also contains dozens of photos, most never published before, along with information directly from numerous descendants of Miller. Miller lived a captivating life before, during, and after the Civil War: a student in Oberlin during a tumultuous time in history; courageous soldier; briefly, a teacher; a highly respected agriculturist; revered member of his community; dedicated, trusted politician; and a son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. You can order the book at local North Eastern Bookstores, (soon to be on) Amazon or direct from her website:https://kbsagert.com/ Kelly is a lot of fun and has several upcoming appearances to hear her speak about the book. Officers from five different law enforcement agencies in Trumbull County witnessed a UFO in 1994 that they couldn't explain, and that the local Air Force Reserve base denied. The sighting never made the news as officers preferred not to be associated with an evening in which hours were spent chasing the UFO down. But intrepid UFO researcher Kenny Young discovered the story by accident a couple of years later, which led to the release of old dispatch recordings and national attention. www.ohiomysteries.comfeedback@ohiomysteries.com www.patreon.com/ohiomysteries www.twitter.com/mysteriesohio www.facebook.com/ohiomysteries Music: Send Me, by Meghan Rachelle. https://www.meghanrachelle.com Additional music: Audionautix- The Great Unknown, and The Great Phospher- Daniel Birch Learn more about your ad choices. OM Backroads: Ep. 111. The origins of the Cleveland Mafia.

2026-06-0124:32

Hello Ohio Mysteries Backroads listeners. Before the bombings, power struggles, and notorious crime bosses that would make Cleveland infamous, there was a small but determined network of Italian immigrants building a criminal empire in the shadows. In this episode, we explore the origins of the Cleveland Mafia, tracing its roots from the late 19th and early 20th centuries as immigrant communities established themselves in Northeast Ohio. Discover how early organized crime figures Joe Leonard and Joe Morello leveraged gambling, bootlegging, extortion, and political connections to create the foundation of what would become one of America's most influential Mafia families. We'll uncover the key personalities, pivotal events, and social conditions that allowed the Cleveland crime syndicate to emerge and grow. From the challenges faced by immigrant neighborhoods to the rise of Prohibition-era opportunities, this episode reveals how the Cleveland underworld evolved from a loose collection of street gangs into a structured criminal organization that would shape the city's history for decades. Join us as we examine the origins of the Cleveland Mafia and the beginnings of a story that would leave a lasting mark on both organized crime and Cleveland itself. Tune in and found out! Our first story explores the efforts of a group of St. Joe High School students from Cleveland, Ohio who figured out a way to listen to and track the Soviet satellite, Sputnik, even before our own military. Our next story we look at astronomer Jerry Ehman in 1977 using the Ohio State University Big Ear radio telescope. OM Backroads: Ep. 107. The Rise and Fall of the Society of the Banana: How one Ohio man took down Americas first criminal empire

2026-04-1429:59

Hello Ohio Mysteries Backroads listeners. In the quiet railroad town of Bellefontaine, crates of bananas once arrived daily—ordinary cargo masking an extraordinary and sinister story. In this episode, we dive into the shadowy world of the so-called “Society of the Banana,” a chilling chapter tied to the rise of the Black Hand in small-town Ohio. What seemed like a simple fruit business became entangled with whispers of extortion, secret threats, and violence carried over from the Old World into America’s heartland. Through the lens of a brutal early 20th-century crime, we explore how immigrant communities were targeted, how coded warnings and fear spread through tight-knit neighborhoods, and how something as innocent as a shipment of bananas could conceal a much darker reality. OM Backroads: Ep. 104. Rosario Borgio's dark reign of the black hand society in Akron, Ohio

2026-03-2313:04

Hello Ohio Mysteries Backroads listeners. In this episode we step into the shadowy underworld of early 20th-century Akron, where whispers of extortion, secret societies, and coded threats gripped immigrant communities in fear. In this gripping episode, we uncover the story of Rosario Borgio—a name tied to the chilling rise of the Black Hand in Northeast Ohio and spurned the rise of organized crime. Borgio was a ruthless killer and brutal enforcer who sought to wage war against law enforcement. His rise to power left a wave of death and violence in his wake. Borgio even offered a bounty on any policeman that was killed in the line of duty. This episode dives into the broader impact of Black Hand activity across Ohio, examining how fear spread through tight-knit immigrant neighborhoods and how law enforcement struggled to combat a secretive and deeply rooted network. Join us as we peel back the layers of crime, culture, and consequence in a story that feels ripped from the pages of a gangster novel—but is all too real. OM Backroads: Ep. 103 Ghosts of Franklin Castle, Part 2: Ohio’s Most Haunted House. Our conversation with William Krejci

2026-03-1652:21

In part 2 of this episode, we explore the long-debated mysteries surrounding Cleveland’s most infamous mansion — Franklin Castle. Often called the most haunted house in Ohio, the towering stone castle on Franklin Boulevard has been surrounded by chilling legends for decades: secret passageways, mysterious deaths, and stories of restless spirits. But how much of the legend is actually true? Joining us is historian and author William G. Krejci, whose extensive research into the castle and the family who built it has helped separate fact from folklore. Krejci has spent years digging through historical records to uncover the real story behind the home built by German immigrant Hannes Tiedemann in the late 1800s. Together we discuss the origins of the castle’s haunted reputation, the tragedies that struck the Tiedemann family, how rumors and media sensationalism shaped the modern legend, and what the historical record actually reveals about life inside the mansion. Is Franklin Castle truly one of America’s most haunted houses—or is its dark reputation the product of a century of mythmaking? OM Backroads: Ep. 101.Frozen Horizons: Cycling Across the Great Lakes in Winter

2026-02-2241:43

What does it take to bike across frozen landscapes most people are snuggled around their fireplaces sipping hot chocolate? In this episode of the podcast, we follow the extraordinary story of one adventurer who set out to ride a bicycle across all five frozen waters of the Great Lakes—a challenge that pushes the limits of endurance, weather, timing, and courage. As winter tightens its grip on the Midwest and Canada, our guest Eric shares how a bold idea turned into a multi-lake expedition spanning Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and Lake Superior. From carefully tracking ice conditions and brutal wind chills to navigating shifting pressure cracks and whiteout storms, the journey was anything but predictable. Each lake presented its own personality: some deceptively calm, others wild, vast, and unforgiving. In this episode, we dive into: How the rider prepared for extreme cold cycling and survival on open ice The science behind when (and if) the lakes freeze solid enough to cross Close calls, mechanical failures, and the mental battle of riding across miles of frozen horizon The unique beauty of winter on the lakes that few people ever witness It’s a story about determination, risk, and the deep connection people in the Great Lakes region have with these massive bodies of water—especially in winter. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, a cycling fan, or simply fascinated by unusual adventures, this episode brings you along for a ride across one of North America’s most ambitious cold-weather challenges. OM Backroads: Ep. 100. Thomas Midgley: The Ohio Inventor Who Almost Ended the World

2026-02-1630:32

In this episode of Ohio Mysteries Backroads, we explore the complicated legacy of one of Ohio’s most consequential — and controversial — inventors: Thomas Midgley Jr.. Born in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania but raised and educated in Ohio, Midgley graduated from Cornell University before launching a career that would change the modern world. Working with Charles Kettering at Dayton Research Laboratoriesin Dayton, Midgley helped solve one of the automobile industry’s biggest problems — engine knock — by introducing tetraethyl lead into gasoline. The result? The rise of “leaded gasoline,” a breakthrough that powered the rapid expansion of the automotive age. But the consequences would prove devastating. Millions were exposed to toxic lead emissions, with public health impacts that echoed for generations. Midgley didn’t stop there. He later helped develop chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), marketed under the brand name Freon, which were hailed as safe, non-toxic refrigerants. Decades later, scientists would discover that CFCs were destroying Earth’s protective ozone layer — leading to global environmental crisis and the landmark Montreal Protocol. In this episode, we ask: Were these catastrophic outcomes foreseeable? What responsibility do inventors bear for the unintended consequences of their creations? And how should Ohio remember a man whose innovations both fueled progress and harmed the planet? Join us as we trace Midgley’s journey through Ohio’s industrial boom, the laboratories of Dayton, and into one of the most cautionary tales in scientific history — right here on Ohio Mysteries Backroads. Ep. 156 - The disturbing world of Ceely Rose

2026-02-0927:38

In 1896, three members of the Rose family - who operated a mill outside Mansfield - fell sick and died. Police suspected the only surviving member of the family - 24-year-old Ceely Rose - must have poisoned them. What they learned about Ceely led to her finishing her life in an asylum, and - some say - haunting her old farmhouse beside the ghosts of her parents and brother. www.ohiomysteries.comfeedback@ohiomysteries.com www.patreon.com/ohiomysteries www.twitter.com/mysteriesohio www.facebook.com/ohiomysteries Music: What I Think of You, by Ash G. George Remus was a lawyer who knew the law better than anyone—and used it to become one of the most powerful criminals in American history. OM Backroads: Ep. 96: Crossing Ohio History: The Tindall Bridge, the Bridge to Nowhere, and the Silver Bridge Disaster

2026-01-1225:44

Hello and welcome to another episode of Ohio Mysteries Backroads. Bridges are meant to connect places—but sometimes, they connect us to tragedy, mystery, and unanswered questions. In this episode, we explore three bridges with notorious pasts, each carrying its own legacy making them stand out among the many Ohio bridges. We begin in Fremont, Ohio, at the Tindall Bridge, a quiet river crossing tied to violent deaths, local legends, and lingering paranormal claims. What happened here, and why has its story endured for generations? Next, we head north to Hillandale Park, Ohio, to uncover the strange history of the “Bridge to Nowhere.” Built with purpose but left isolated and unfinished, this forgotten structure raises questions about abandoned plans, lost industry, and why some places are simply left behind. Finally, we travel to Gallipolis, Ohio to revisit one of the most devastating infrastructure failures in American history—the Silver Bridge disaster of 1967. In a matter of seconds, a routine rush-hour commute turned into catastrophe, claiming 46 lives and forever changing how the nation inspects its bridges. From local legends and forgotten crossings to a nationally significant tragedy, this episode examines how bridges can become symbols of both connection and collapse—and why their stories still matter today.
