Liberty athletics draws more students, reaches state competition

Liberty Central School District's athletic programs increased participation across all grade levels and seasons since launching the Champion Plan a year ago, Athletic Director Thomas Zehner said.

The initiative expands existing programs like Athletes Helping Athletes and adds coaching development and mentorship between older and younger athletes. Coach Kevin Metcalf, from St. Joseph Regional, led professional development workshops for Liberty coaches at all levels.

The district launched elementary intramural programs and expanded opportunities for varsity athletes to assist youth sports teams and run skills clinics.

Liberty alpine skiers and girls indoor track and field athletes competed at the state level this year. Multiple teams earned league and sectional playoff berths, and several athletes received all-star honors.
