Prisma Health Expands Rural SC Clinics to Address Care Gaps

South Carolina's rural healthcare landscape is shifting as Prisma Health moves to address a critical gap in primary care access. The Greenville-based system, which operates campuses and facilities throughout the state, is strategically positioning new clinics in underserved regions where residents often delay treatment or rely on emergency rooms for basic medical needs.

While Prisma Health is not alone in this effort, the expansion reflects a broader recognition across the South that rural healthcare has become a priority. Clemson University has already established its own Rural Health network, operating primary care clinics in communities like Orangeburg, where the Clemson Health Clinic at 1181 Hutto Street serves residents of Orangeburg, Bamberg, Barnwell and Calhoun Counties. That facility, which operates Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., provides in-person appointments, telehealth services, and operates two mobile health units for deeper rural outreach.

Prisma Health's expansion strategy differs in scale and scope. As South Carolina's largest private, non-profit healthcare system, the organization has the infrastructure and resources to simultaneously address primary care shortages and reduce the burden on hospital emergency departments. The new clinics will serve as entry points for preventive care, chronic disease management, and routine medical services—functions that currently push many rural residents toward costlier emergency care.

The timing of this expansion is significant. Rural South Carolina has experienced persistent healthcare workforce shortages, limited specialty services, and higher rates of uninsured residents. By establishing clinics closer to home, Prisma Health aims to build trust, improve health outcomes, and create sustainable demand for primary care services in communities that have historically lacked adequate access.

The success of this initiative will depend on Prisma Health's ability to recruit qualified providers, maintain consistent operations, and ensure affordability for vulnerable populations. In a state where healthcare disparities correlate directly with geography and income, the clinic network represents a concrete step toward more equitable access to care.
