Irmo Corporal Named Finalist for State's Top Policing Honor

Irmo Police Corporal Christopher Stokes has been named a finalist for the Greg Alia Award, South Carolina's highest recognition for community policing excellence.

The award memorializes Forest Acres Police Officer Greg Alia, killed in the line of duty in 2015. It recognizes officers who bridge divides between police and residents.

Stokes paid from his own pocket to restore insurance for a resident facing job loss. When an elderly woman lost her home to a scam, he paid for her car repairs and cared for her dog while she recovered from heat exposure. He has spent off-duty hours restoring power and food access for elderly residents.

Irmo Police Chief Bobby Dale said Stokes embodies Alia's legacy. "For every bad story you hear about law enforcement, there are millions of good stories that go unseen," Dale said. "Stokes takes that to a whole new level."

Lieutenant Andrea Grinstead, who nominated Stokes, wrote that he helps people without seeking recognition. A resident who held negative views of law enforcement said multiple encounters with Stokes changed that perspective.

Stokes also runs a youth etiquette course and maintains a presence in local neighborhoods.
