Gophers Women's Hockey Claims First WCHA Title Since 2018 in Epic Run
MINNEAPOLIS — The No. 5 Gophers women's hockey team (24-6-1 overall, 18-6-1 WCHA) clinched the WCHA tournament championship Saturday at Ridder Arena, defeating Wisconsin 4-2 in overtime to advance and secure their first postseason crown since 2018. Earlier, Minnesota dispatched Ohio State 3-1 en route to the final, marking a dominant Final Faceoff performance at the Minneapolis venue that draws thousands of maroon-and-gold faithful. Abbey Murphy, the Gophers' standout forward, continued her torrid pace with key contributions, building on her career-high 63 points from regular-season play.
The semifinal clash against the No. 2 Badgers showcased Minnesota's resilience, overturning a tense rivalry matchup where Wisconsin had previously edged the Gophers 4-3 in overtime on Feb. 16 at LaBahn Arena in Madison. Goaltender Skylar Vetter anchored the defense with critical saves, echoing her 15-save effort in a prior overtime win over Minnesota State. Forward Peyton Hemp's clutch plays mirrored her game-winner against the Mavericks, fueling the Gophers' extra-point mentality throughout the tournament.
This victory provides momentum heading into NCAA playoffs, contrasting a 3-7 record against Wisconsin in prior WCHA finals, including a 4-3 heartbreaker in 2025 at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth where Sara Wozniewicz scored with 25 seconds left. Josefin Bouveng and Allie Franco added offensive firepower, with Bouveng hitting 40 career goals. For Minnesota fans, the win amplifies the state's hockey passion, from Ridder's raucous crowds to dreams of a Frozen Four return at Xcel Energy Center.
