APD Nabs Suspect in Albuquerque Downtown Shooting Spree
Albuquerque Police Department officers apprehended a 28-year-old man Saturday night in connection with a series of shootings that left three people wounded near 3rd Street and Copper Avenue, a hotspot for bars and late-night crowds in downtown Albuquerque. The spree began just before 4 a.m., when gunfire erupted following a confrontation over a mistaken vehicle break-in, according to initial reports from KOB 4. Victims were rushed to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where their non-life-threatening injuries were treated, highlighting APD's rapid response in the city's entertainment district.
While specifics on the suspect's identity remain withheld pending formal charges, law enforcement leveraged surveillance video, license plate readers and ShotSpotter alerts—tools frequently credited in recent Albuquerque cases—to track and arrest him. This incident echoes a pattern of downtown violence, including a separate Saturday morning murder nearby where 44-year-old Edwin Sanders allegedly shot Estevan Gomez after accusing him of car theft near the same intersection. Gomez, who had traveled from Española for an event, died at the scene following a shot through his vehicle window.
The arrest comes amid heightened scrutiny of gun crimes in Albuquerque's core, where homeless populations and nightlife intersect, as seen in a recent Old Town fatal shooting of a homeless person by 44-year-old Arturo Jose Nanez. Nanez admitted to detectives his hatred for the unhoused and faces murder charges after police traced his SUV using similar tech. APD Chief Harold Medina emphasized community safety in a statement, noting over 20 downtown shooting responses this year alone, urging residents to report suspicious activity via 911.
