Red Flag Warning Issued: High Fire Danger Today in Region
A Red Flag Warning is in effect today from noon to 7:00 PM MDT for portions of Nebraska and Wyoming due to high winds and low humidity, increasing rapid fire spread risk. Outdoor burning is not recommended.
Residents in Pine Ridge/Nebraska National Forest, Niobrara/Lower Elevations of Converse/Thunder Basin National Grassland, Middle North Platte River Basin/Niobrara and Converse High Plains, North Laramie Range and Adjacent High Plains, North Laramie Valley/Shirley Basin, Ferris/Seminoe/Shirley Mountains, Central and West Carbon, Upper North Platte River Basin, North Snowy Range Foothills, and Bordeaux/Chugwater/Wheatland are advised that a Red Flag Warning is in effect from noon today, October 9, 2026, until 7:00 PM MDT this evening, October 9, 2026.
The National Weather Service in Cheyenne, WY, has issued this severe warning due to expected strong winds and low relative humidity, creating critical fire weather conditions. Southwest winds are anticipated to be 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph, coupled with relative humidity levels between 12 to 18 percent.
Any fires that ignite under these conditions are expected to spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended. Local officials and fire crews in the affected areas have been advised of this Red Flag Warning.
