Tropical Storm Warning for Central Alabama: Prepare for Dangerous Winds, Flooding
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for much of Central Alabama, with dangerous winds, significant rainfall, and isolated tornadoes expected late tonight through Saturday. Residents should finalize preparations for potential power outages, flooding, and secure safe shelter.
The National Weather Service in Birmingham, AL, has issued a Tropical Cyclone Local Statement today, October 9, at 7:11 PM CDT, placing much of Central Alabama under a Tropical Storm Warning. Residents in Autauga, Barbour, Bibb, Bullock, Chambers, Chilton, Clay, Coosa, Dallas, Elmore, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Lamar, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Marengo, Marion, Montgomery, Perry, Pickens, Pike, Randolph, Russell, Shelby, St. Clair, Sumter, Talladega, Tallapoosa, Tuscaloosa, Walker, and Winston counties should finalize preparations immediately.
Hurricane Isaias, currently located approximately 240 miles south of Birmingham, is moving north at 18 mph with sustained winds of 110 mph. Dangerous winds gusting as high as 50 to 60+ mph are expected late tonight through Saturday, potentially causing widespread downed trees and power lines. Rainfall amounts of 1.5 to 4 inches, with isolated totals up to 5 inches, could lead to flash flooding, especially in urban areas. Isolated tornadoes are possible, mainly east of Interstate 65, particularly in southeastern Central Alabama.
Protect against dangerous winds by securing loose outdoor objects. Prepare for life-threatening rainfall flooding; never drive through flooded roadways. If a Tornado Warning is issued, seek shelter quickly in an interior room away from windows. Stay informed through weather.gov, NOAA Weather radio, or local news outlets. The next update is expected around midnight, or sooner if conditions warrant.
