Florida Southern College has expanded its student wellness and recreation offerings, adding diverse sports, fitness facilities and aquatic activities on campus.
Students can participate in intramural sports including flag football, volleyball, soccer, softball, ultimate frisbee and basketball. These programs provide opportunities for organized play and casual games.
The Wellness Center serves as the hub for these activities. Its main lobby, Tanner Hall, features weight-training machines, functional fitness equipment and a large-screen TV. Adjacent is the Kirk McKay, Jr. Exercise Room, equipped with treadmills, cycles, elliptical machines, rowing machines and free weights. The James K. Sikes Aerobics Room, with a wood spring floor, hosts group fitness classes such as Zumba, Pilates, Strong and Fit and Yoga.
Aquatic facilities include an eight-lane, 25-yard competition pool with a recreational shallow end. The pool accommodates water basketball, volleyball and water polo. It is open year-round and heated during colder months. Certified instructors offer swim lessons tailored to individual skill levels and goals. The pool area also provides space for water games and relaxation.
Beyond the Wellness Center, Florida Southern College offers outdoor recreational spaces. Sand volleyball courts are located on Columbia Street across from Wynee’s Bistro. Intramural fields for ultimate frisbee and flag football are on Callahan Court. The college also maintains tennis and volleyball courts.
The Waterfront on Lake Hollingsworth provides kayaking and paddleboarding opportunities. Students can check out sports equipment, including frisbees, sand volleyballs, tennis racquets, softballs, soccer balls and footballs, from the Recreation Room.
