Las Vegas City Government Structure Explained

Mayor & City Council Contact Your Council Members The City of Las Vegas operates under a council-manager form of government. This means that the City Council, made up of the mayor and six council members, acts as the legislative body of the city, setting policies and making decisions on behalf of the community. The city manager is appointed by the City Council and serves as the chief executive officer of the city, responsible for implementing the policies and managing the day-to-day operations of the city government. City Council meetings are typically held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at 9 a.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 495 S. Main St., Las Vegas, NV 89101. Agendas for upcoming meetings are posted on the city's website at least 72 hours in advance. The City Council is responsible for a wide range of issues, including: Adopting the city budget Enacting ordinances and resolutions Approving contracts and agreements Appointing members to boards and commissions Making decisions on land use and development Addressing issues of public safety and welfare The mayor serves as the presiding officer of the City Council and is responsible for leading the city government. The mayor also represents the city at regional, state, and national events. Each of the six council members represents a specific ward within the city. Council members are elected by the residents of their ward and serve four-year terms. To contact your council member, please visit the city's website or call the City Clerk's office at 702-229-6242.
