Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) Also known as artificial insemination, intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment that involves placing sperm directly into a woman’s uterus to facilitate fertilization. The goal of IUI is to increase the number of sperm that reach the fallopian tubes and subsequently increase the chance of fertilization. IUI is a less invasive and less expensive option than in vitro fertilization (IVF). It is often recommended as the first line of treatment for couples with unexplained infertility, mild male factor infertility, or women with cervical mucus problems. How IUI Works The IUI procedure typically involves the following steps: Ovulation Induction: The woman may be given fertility medications to stimulate the development of multiple eggs. Sperm Preparation: A semen sample is collected from the male partner or a sperm donor. The sperm is then washed and concentrated to select the healthiest and most motile sperm. Insemination: The prepared sperm is inserted directly into the woman’s uterus using a thin catheter. The procedure is typically painless and takes only a few minutes. After the IUI procedure, the woman may be advised to rest for a short period of time. A pregnancy test is usually performed about two weeks after the procedure. IUI Success Rates The success rate of IUI varies depending on several factors, including the woman’s age, the cause of infertility, and the number of eggs that are developed. In general, the success rate of IUI is about 10-20% per cycle. Benefits of IUI IUI is a less invasive and less expensive option than IVF. It can be performed in a doctor’s office or clinic. It can be used to treat a variety of infertility problems. Risks of IUI The risks of IUI are generally low. The most common risks include: Multiple pregnancy (if fertility medications are used) Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) (if fertility medications are used) Infection If you are considering IUI, it is important to talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of the procedure. Together, you can decide if IUI is the right treatment option for you.
