Lake City Completes Bird Survey for Market Street Project

Lake City Clears Trees for Market Street Project After Bird Survey

Lake City officials completed a bird nesting survey on April 23 for the Market Street Reconstruction project near Washington Street and Market, finding no active nests in the removal area.

Bolton & Menk's natural resources staff conducted the survey following U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service guidance under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, a federal law protecting native bird species. Though the project requires no state or federal permits, the city chose to follow the guidelines.

The city plans to remove only trees necessary for safe construction and maintenance of an infiltration pond. Public Works will plant new trees to offset those removed.

The new infiltration pond will improve stormwater management and water quality at the currently informal infiltration zone, providing a defined outlet and basin for inspection and maintenance.
