Federal Agencies Issue Winter Heating Safety Alert

June 11, 2026

Federal agencies are alerting the public to potential dangers associated with home heating during colder months. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued warnings about carbon monoxide poisoning and fires related to heating equipment.

Dr. Howard Frumkin, director of the National Center for Environmental Health at the CDC, emphasized the importance of ensuring proper ventilation when using fuel-burning appliances. “Every year, many people die from carbon monoxide poisoning,” Frumkin stated. The gas is odorless and colorless, making it difficult to detect without a working carbon monoxide detector.

The CPSC also highlighted fire risks associated with space heaters and fireplaces. They recommend maintaining a three-foot safety zone around heating equipment, keeping flammable materials away. CPSC Chairman Alex Hoehn-Saric advised consumers to inspect their heating systems regularly. "Regular inspection and maintenance of heating systems can prevent fires," Hoehn-Saric said.

The agencies recommend several precautions, including:

* Installing carbon monoxide detectors on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas. * Having heating systems, including furnaces, chimneys, and vents, inspected and cleaned annually by a qualified professional. * Never using generators, charcoal grills, or other fuel-burning devices indoors.

Both agencies stressed the importance of following manufacturer's instructions for heating appliances and remaining vigilant about potential hazards throughout the winter season. Prompt attention to any warning signs, such as unusual odors or malfunctioning equipment, is key to ensuring safety, they said.
