Discovery Academy: 2026-27 Controlled Open Enrollment

Discovery Academy of Lake Alfred (DALA) reminds parents and guardians of its Controlled Open Enrollment (COE) process for the upcoming 2026-27 school year. This state-mandated program allows Florida residents to apply to public schools, including charter schools like DALA, if capacity allows.

DALA manages its application process in line with Polk County timelines. Schools are generally considered open for COE if they operate below 90% capacity. DALA updates its capacity by grade level and posts this information on its website.

While any Florida resident may apply, preference goes to students within Polk County. Students accepted through COE can attend DALA through 8th grade if they maintain good disciplinary standing. Ineligible applicants include those with current expulsions or suspensions.

The COE application window for DALA runs from Jan. 16-30, 2026. DALA often receives more applications than available seats, requiring a random lottery. Siblings of current students, children of relocating military personnel, and children of Discovery Schools staff and Governing Board members receive priority in the lottery.

Families typically receive acceptance or waitlist notifications via email or phone by mid-to-late April. Offers require acceptance within five business days. Enrollment at DALA does not guarantee admission to Discovery High School. Current 8th graders seeking to attend Discovery High must apply separately during the high school's open enrollment period.
