Riverview residents who used independent ATMs between October 24, 2007, and August 14, 2026, may be eligible to claim a portion of a $167.5 million class action settlement involving Visa and Mastercard. The lawsuit, filed in 2011, alleged that the credit card giants prevented independent ATM operators from charging lower fees, leading to higher costs for consumers.
The proposed settlement fund will see Visa contribute $88.775 million and Mastercard add $78.725 million. Independent ATMs are those not owned by banks or other financial institutions, commonly found in places like convenience stores, hotels, bars, and gas stations. The case, known as Burke v. Visa Inc., claimed that Visa and Mastercard's rules restricted how these operators could set their access fees, thereby limiting competition and impacting consumers.
To file a claim, eligible individuals must submit their information by the deadline of February 10, 2027. The amount each person receives will depend on the total number of valid claims submitted and the number of qualifying transactions reported. Visa and Mastercard have denied the allegations but agreed to the settlement without admitting liability.
A court hearing is scheduled for February 17, 2027, to determine whether the settlement will receive final approval. Residents can find the official claim form and additional information on the settlement website. For direct assistance, consumers can also contact the settlement administrator by calling 866-893-1052.
