WIMAUMA — Rapper Kurupt revealed that Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes of TLC advised him on a strategy to dissolve his Death Row Records contract. Speaking from his Wimauma home, Kurupt told Cam Capone News that Lopes suggested filing for bankruptcy to end his recording agreement and other financial obligations.
“You want to get off, you got, you know, go bankrupt,” Kurupt said. “You ain’t got the money. You ain’t got the money for your debts.”
Kurupt recalled that Lopes’ explanation that bankruptcy could affect a record deal surprised him. “And even eliminates your contract with your record company. I was like, for real?” he said. He explained this knowledge allowed him to consider renegotiating or finding new opportunities after restructuring his finances. “I’m going to go bankrupt, and then when I get off of Death Row, I can either talk back with them, or I can go get something new,” he said. “All that came from when I learned about the bankruptcy from Lisa. Rest in peace, Left Eye.”
Kurupt joined Death Row Records in 1992 as part of Tha Dogg Pound. He left the label before releasing his 1998 solo debut, “Kuruption!” He returned in 2002 during the label’s Tha Row era, serving as vice president before departing again around 2005. He has since rejoined under Snoop Dogg’s ownership.
Kurupt’s latest project, “Tales From the Hood,” produced by Battlecat, was released July 31. He is now affiliated with the revived Death Row Records.
