Dangerous Swimming Conditions Expected Through Tonight in Northern La Porte County

Dangerous swimming conditions are expected in Northern La Porte County from tonight until early tomorrow morning, prompting a Beach Hazards Statement from the National Weather Service.

Northern La Porte County residents and visitors are advised to remain out of the water due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service Northern Indiana. The statement is effective immediately, from September 22 at 10:09 PM EDT, and will remain in effect until September 23 at 5:00 AM EDT.

Dangerous swimming conditions are expected, characterized by waves of 2 to 4 feet, subsiding to 1 to 3 feet. A strong southward flowing longshore current is anticipated, along with strong structural currents near piers and breakwalls, particularly on the north sides. Rip currents are also possible within sandbars.

These conditions pose significant risks, as strong currents can pull swimmers into deeper water and high waves can sweep individuals off piers. To ensure safety, the National Weather Service urges everyone to remain out of the water. Additionally, it is critical to avoid venturing out onto piers during this time.

This Beach Hazards Statement specifically affects Northern La Porte County. Residents are encouraged to share this information with others in the community.
