Pierce County has eased its burn restrictions, moving from Stage 2 to Stage 1, effective immediately. The change allows residents to resume small recreational fires in approved fire pits, while barbecues using gas, charcoal, or wood remain permitted.
The decision to relax the restrictions was made by Pierce County Fire Marshal Ken Rice in coordination with local fire chiefs. Stage 1 still prohibits land-clearing fires and the burning of yard debris.
“Cooler and wetter conditions have reduced the wildfire risk that prompted the Stage 2 restrictions,” Fire Marshal Ken Rice stated. “We’re grateful to our community for taking the burn ban seriously and doing their part to prevent fires this summer. Moving back to Stage 1 gives residents more options while still limiting wildfire risk. Please continue making safe, responsible choices as we head into fall.”
The county’s Stage 1 restrictions now align with the statewide burn ban, which is currently scheduled to remain in effect through September 30. Pierce County uses the state’s timeline as a guide for lifting its own restrictions, though the state’s date could be adjusted based on evolving fire conditions.
Residents living within incorporated cities and towns should contact their local jurisdiction for specific burn requirements, as regulations may differ.
