Dangerous Rip Currents Expected for Outer Banks, Core Banks Beaches Today
A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for East Carteret and the Northern Outer Banks until 8:00 PM EDT today, October 10, due to dangerous rip currents.
Beachgoers are advised of a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Newport/Morehead City NC, indicating dangerous rip currents are expected today, October 10, until 8:00 PM EDT.
This statement is in effect for East Carteret and the Northern Outer Banks, specifically impacting Northern Outer Banks beaches and Core Banks beaches. Rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water. The NWS notes that the most likely time for strong rip currents to occur is a couple of hours on either side of low tide, which is expected around 2:00 PM today, Saturday.
If caught in a rip current, remain calm. Swim in a direction following the shoreline. If tired, float or tread water until out of the rip current. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
