Dangerous Rip Currents Expected Along Outer Banks Beaches
Dangerous rip currents are expected along the Northern Outer Banks and Core Banks beaches from 8 AM to 8 PM today, October 10; swimmers should exercise extreme caution and follow safety guidelines.
A Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for the Northern Outer Banks and Core Banks beaches due to dangerous rip currents, effective from 8 AM EDT this morning, October 10, until 8 PM EDT this evening. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Newport/Morehead City NC issued the statement at 2:55 AM EDT.
Rip currents can sweep even the strongest swimmers away from shore into deeper water. The NWS advises that the most likely time for strong rip currents will be a couple of hours around low tide, which is expected around 2:00 PM today.
If you are caught in a rip current, remain calm. Swim in a direction following the shoreline. If you become tired, float or tread water until you are out of the rip current. If you are unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
