Beach Hazards Statement Issued for Ocracoke and Hatteras Islands

A Beach Hazards Statement has been issued for Ocracoke and Hatteras Islands due to dangerous rip currents and large breaking waves, effective until October 10 at 8:00 PM EDT.

Residents and visitors to Ocracoke Island and Hatteras Island should be aware of a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Newport/Morehead City NC. The statement is effective immediately, October 9, at 8:33 PM EDT, and remains in effect until October 10 at 8:00 PM EDT.

The NWS warns of dangerous rip currents and large breaking waves, with surf expected to reach 6 to 8 feet in the surf zone. These conditions create dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, as well as localized beach erosion.

Inexperienced swimmers are advised to remain out of the water due to the dangerous surf. If caught in a rip current, individuals should remain calm and swim parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, float or tread water until out of the current. If still unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. The most likely time for strong rip currents to occur on Saturday is a couple of hours either side of low tide, which is expected around 2:00 PM.
