Beach Hazards & Coastal Flood Advisory for Northern Outer Banks
A Beach Hazards Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory are in effect for the Northern Outer Banks until tonight, warning of dangerous rip currents, large waves, hazardous debris, and potential flooding in low-lying areas.
Residents and visitors in the Northern Outer Banks should exercise extreme caution today, September 27, due to a Beach Hazards Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Newport/Morehead City NC.
A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect until 8:00 PM EDT this evening. Dangerous rip currents, large breaking waves, and hazardous debris are expected in the surf zone. Inexperienced swimmers must remain out of the water due to these dangerous surf conditions. Watch out for debris that may be in the water.
A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until midnight EDT tonight. This advisory impacts low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways with compromised dune structures, and soundside areas prone to flooding in and near Manteo. Up to 1 to 2 feet of inundation above ground level is possible. If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.
The next oceanside high tide is around 8:30 PM Sunday. Soundside high tides are around 11:30 AM Sunday and midnight Sunday night. Strong rip currents are most likely a couple of hours either side of low tide, which will occur around 2:30 PM Sunday.
