Key West Storm Drain Adoption Program Reduces Flooding
The City of Key West launched a volunteer program asking residents and businesses to adopt storm drains near their properties and clear away debris that blocks drainage.
Participants in the Adopt-a-Drain program remove leaves, litter, and other materials from drains and grates, particularly during heavy rain. The effort reduces street flooding and prevents contaminants from washing into canals and nearshore waters.
City officials said residents spot problem drains faster than municipal crews can monitor them. The program targets debris before it accumulates enough to cause localized flooding.
Residents, businesses, and neighborhood groups can register by submitting a fillable PDF application on the city's website. Volunteers select a specific drain location to maintain.
