Monroe County Releases 700 Affordable Housing Units
Monroe County Commissioners made approximately 700 affordable housing units available for immediate development in unincorporated areas, departing from the standard practice of releasing market-rate units over several years.
The decision stems from a 2016 Comprehensive Plan adopted to address a severe shortage of affordable housing across the island chain. Key West residents and county residents struggle to find affordable homes due to high land values, limited developable land, and an economy dependent on lower-wage service sector jobs.
The Rate of Growth Ordinance (ROGO) restricts new construction countywide. Florida designated Monroe County an Area of Critical State Concern because the state requires the entire population to evacuate within 24 hours if a hurricane approaches, limiting the number of residents the infrastructure can support.
The Commissioners also passed BOCC Resolution 2023 and BOCC Resolution 167-2021 to address affordable housing needs.
