Beaverton Nike HQ Expands with $1B Sustainable Push
BEAVERTON, Ore. (Day.News) — Nike Inc. revealed designs in 2016 for a massive expansion of its World Headquarters campus in Beaverton, just outside Portland, adding 3.2 million square feet of office, mixed-use and parking facilities. The project, estimated at $1 billion by The Oregonian based on regional construction costs, targets completion by 2018 and draws aesthetic inspiration from 'human movement,' with structures radiating from a central beacon honoring the goddess Nike. The campus, opened in 1990 at One Bowerman Drive, has doubled in size through prior expansions and supports design and development for global athletes.
Leading the architectural effort are Oregon-based firms ZGF Architects, SRG Partnership and Skylab Architecture, while Portland's Place Studio handles landscaping to integrate green spaces, pathways and sports fields. Sustainable features include natural daylighting, passive chilled beams for efficient heating and cooling, and a closed-loop grey water treatment center, all pursuing LEED Platinum certification. Nike has not officially confirmed the cost but emphasized workspaces fostering collaboration and rapid innovation.
The expansion addresses growth needs, including space for approximately 3,700 additional employees across 1.349 million square feet of new office area, bolstering Beaverton's role as a hub for the region's tech and apparel sectors. A specific 50,000-square-foot Mike Krzyzewski Fitness Center and parking garage, designed by ZGF, highlights Nike's investment in employee wellness amid Washington County's booming economy.
