Ann Bryan Named Rochester Christian University's Philanthropist of the Year

Dr. Reggies Wenyika and Ann Bryan Rochester Christian University honors Ann Bryan, alongside her late husband Bert, as this year’s Philanthropist of the Year. Through their foundation, Bryan Christian Services, the Bryans have demonstrated a life marked by faith, generosity and a deep commitment to serving others, both locally and around the world. Established in 2002, Bryan Christian Services was born from a simple but powerful conviction. “Our goal was just to be a blessing because we had been blessed,” Ann said. What began as a private nonprofit foundation intentionally set aside for giving has grown into a wide-reaching ministry supporting Christian schools, churches, camps, missionaries and individuals in need. Their generosity has funded education for students in Uganda, provided wheelchairs for amputees, supported youth programs and church ministries, and helped students access Christian schooling when finances stood in the way. The Bryans’ connection to Rochester Christian University dates back decades through their involvement with the Rochester Church of Christ. Over the years, that connection deepened into something personal and lasting. Their home became a place of welcome for students — offering home-cooked meals, laundry and encouragement to those far from home. “We had a number of students who became our adopted kids,” Ann said. Ann’s involvement with RCU expanded even further when she joined the Department of Education in 2014, coordinating field placements and teaching introductory education and educational psychology courses. Her heart for students shaped her work, she said, allowing her to place future teachers in environments where they could thrive. “I wanted to know the students beyond what was on paper,” she said, ensuring each placement reflected both personality and purpose. Bert’s journey with RCU followed an unexpected but impactful path. After an early retirement from a successful career in technology, he returned to RCU to earn his master’s degree in religious education, missional leadership. What followed was a season of joyful service for Bert as he worked in development office, connected with students, and became a familiar face in chapel and athletic events. Known as the basketball team’s biggest encourager, Bert had a gift for making people feel seen, valued and supported. Together, Ann and Bert’s philanthropy at RCU extended beyond formal scholarships. They became a trusted source of support for students facing unexpected needs — whether tuition gaps, travel expenses, clothing or childcare — quietly stepping in to help when assistance was needed most. Their giving was never transactional; it was relational, rooted in faith and compassion. That legacy continues today, not only through the lives they’ve touched but also through family. Ann’s granddaughter is now an RCU student, making her presence on campus a meaningful full-circle moment. “I’m thrilled to see her here appreciating the things that Bert and I cared so deeply about,” Ann said. Even now, Ann’s life reflects joy and resilience. A longtime competitive ballroom dancer, she continues to compete in the Michigan Senior Olympics, embodying the same grace and determination that define her philanthropy. Through Bryan Christian Services and through a lifetime of intentional generosity, Ann Bryan exemplifies what it means to live out faith through action. Her impact, alongside Bert’s enduring legacy, will continue to shape lives at Rochester Christian University for generations to come. Oakland University Saudi Student Association Celebrates Eid al-Adha

"The Saudi Student Association celebrated Eid al-Adha at Elliott Tower on May 29th. Under the full flower moon cloaked in sunlight, friends, family, teachers and peers shared traditional Mediterranean food to celebrate Eid al-Adha. Eid al Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, is one of the most sacred days on the Muslim calendar, although its cause for celebration is a deeper story rooted in Abrahamic belief. It celebrates God swapping out the son of Abraham for a ram as he was to be sacrificed, as God was satisfied by Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son. Muslims also celebrate the peak of the pilgrimage to Mecca during this time, one of the key pillars of Islam. Traditionally, lamb, cow or sheep is offered as a feast, and the meat is broken into three parts: friends, family and those who need it most. It is of the utmost spiritual importance that all get to eat. The Saudi Student Association considered well-known Saudi hospitality when preparing the menu. It was a meal that would set most offerings at a college festival to blush — a sprawling buffet of Mediterranean cuisine: kofta meat, grilled chicken, beef shawarma, grape leaves, Fattoush, Tabbouleh, Falafel, and Lebanese french fries. The president of the organization, Ahmed Alobaidan — a PhD student in educational leadership — moved like a man with eight arms when organizing the event. He went from hugging and greeting friends and family, to preparing the most Instagram-able dessert tray yet seen on campus. “Please grab ice cream!”  he said when coordinating food for a growing crowd. Attendees discussed the origins and meaning of the holiday while eating Dubai-chocolate Magnum Ice Cream. “I was Ahmed’s ESL teacher at Henry Ford when he was first learning English,” Ed Demerly, a retired educator and lifelong volunteer and advocate, said. “I suspect he might be a little better now,” he added while smirking. “I was the director of English language and a teacher; I believe I taught students from 80 different countries.” He was also a volunteer with the Peace Corps after completing military service. The two have maintained a friendship for over a decade. Observing their interactions and the way they described each other, they are a clear showcase of the power of educators and community more broadly. While interviewing Ed, Ahmed and he linked eyes — and were pulled to each other with a nostalgic magnetism known only to the most impactful of mentors and mentees. They exchanged a bro hug, and their enthralling conversation was cut short by Ahmed’s daughter running excitedly to her father. “Baba! Baba!” she said. Ahmed smiled, cut the meeting short, and moved on to the next of his dozen obligations. In that moment — the true meaning of the holiday was on display. A third for friends, old and new alike. A big third for family. And a third remembered on a sun-worn crimson Peace Corps T-shirt and the scrambling students getting free dinner in the background.  "

Now in its fourth year, the program highlights emerging illustration and design talent through a curriculum-based project challenging students to create a professional design that captures the energy and spirit of the iconic amphitheatre. Anthony’s limited-edition design will serve as the official 2026 season poster and will be featured as a Proud Partner promotional giveaway at select shows throughout the summer.   “I've gone to Pine Knob for shows before, and the best part is that it is an amphitheatre,” said Anthony. “I love nature, and I love music; they are some of the most important things in my life. I was super excited to work this out and really focus on the nature of Pine Knob. I came up with a pine tree giant playing a pinewood guitar out in the forest. All of the parts of his design are relevant to pine trees, as the mushrooms growing around it are matsutake, which grow symbiotically with conifers. The moss that makes up its ‘hair’ is informally called ‘old man's beard’; which is perfect for plant hair. I set it in a warm sunset, as that is the peak time at Pine Knob during the summer with the warm summer sun illuminating the performer. I love that I had the opportunity to express my love for plants and music all in one piece.”   2026 Pine Knob Music Theatre Winning Poster Designed by College for Creative Studies’ Anthony Pizzo Click Here For Larger Image   ELEVATE CONCERT EXPERIENCE WITH PREMIUM UPGRADES This summer, ticket holders can elevate their concert experience with VIP Upgrades, featuring access to the MotorCity Casino Hotel VIP Club at Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre and the VIP Sun Deck at Meadow Brook Amphitheatre.
