Rip Current Statement Issued for Kenedy, Willacy, and Cameron Islands
A Rip Current Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory have been issued for Kenedy Island, Willacy Island, and Cameron Island by NWS Brownsville TX, effective immediately, warning of dangerous rip currents and minor coastal flooding through Monday.
Residents and visitors in Kenedy Island, Willacy Island, and Cameron Island are advised of a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Brownsville TX, effective immediately until October 11 at 7:00 PM CDT.
A High Rip Current Risk is in effect through Sunday evening. This means dangerous rip currents are expected, which can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water. If caught in a rip current, the NWS advises relaxing and floating. Do not swim against the current. If able, swim parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. Always swim near a lifeguard if possible.
Additionally, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until 7 AM CDT Monday, anticipating minor coastal flooding. Nuisance flooding is expected, with water potentially reaching or pushing into the dunes on South Padre Island. Vehicles without four-wheel drive and high wheel bases will be unable to drive on the beach, particularly north of Public Beach Access #3. Minor to moderate beach erosion is also expected. Max inundation will occur near high tide cycles, specifically Sunday at 1:59 AM and 5:57 PM.
If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. The High Surf Advisory is no longer in effect as of 7 PM CDT this evening.
