U.S. Passports How to Apply in Person First Time Applicants You must apply in person if at least one of the following is true: You are applying for your first U.S. passport Your previous U.S. passport was issued when you were under age 16 Your previous U.S. passport was lost, stolen, or damaged Your previous U.S. passport was issued more than 15 years ago If none of the above are true, you may be able to renew your passport by mail. How to Renew by Mail Renew My Passport You are eligible to renew your passport by mail if your most recent passport: Is undamaged and can be submitted with your application Was issued when you were age 16 or older Was issued within the last 15 years Was issued in your current name (or you can document your name change with an original or certified copy of your marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order) Children Under 16 Apply for a Child's Passport Both parents/guardians must authorize the issuance of a passport for children under age 16. Report a Lost or Stolen Passport Report Your Lost or Stolen Passport You should immediately report your lost or stolen passport to prevent someone else from using it.
