Sheriff Hoffman Holds Awards Ceremony

NEWS RELEASE 25-060 - NOVEMBER 19,  2025

NEWS RELEASE 25-060 - NOVEMBER 19,  2025 Pictured left to right: Deps. Andrew Symuleski, Bensly Melidor, Cameron Lock, Sheriff Kurt A. Hoffman; Terry Kolodzieski, Ed Kolodzieski, Sheriff Kurt A. Hoffman; DFL/ICAC Unit not pictured. Sarasota County Sheriff Kurt A. Hoffman presented several awards at a ceremony on Wednesday. Deputies Cameron Lock, Bensly Melidor, and Andrew Symuleski received the Life Saving Award regarding a suicidal male who was at the Deer Prairie Creek Preserve Park holding a shotgun to his chest. Before deputies arrived, the male had shot himself. Lock, Symuleski, and Melidor arrived simultaneously and located the male lying face up on the ground with a gunshot wound on the left side of his chest. Lock and Symuleski began life saving measures. Melidor retrieved two chest seals for Lock, who applied them to the gunshot injury. Once the application was complete, Deputies Lock and Symuleski held a dressing over the wound and applied pressure. The Sarasota County Fire Department (SCFD) arrived and took over aid. SCFD personnel advised that the loss of blood was minimal due to the quick actions and proper techniques utilized by the deputies. The male was flown by Bayflite to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he underwent surgery and survived. The deputies performed swiftly while making proper decisions and providing lifesaving procedures which were crucial in preserving the male's life. Digital Forensics Lab (DFL) and Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Unit received the Meritorious Achievement Award for demonstrating exceptional dedication, innovation, and impact on the agency. The DFL/ICAC Unit has initiated critical agency-wide improvements that have significantly enhanced the efficiency and effectiveness of the agency. Their key contributions include an agency-wide training initiative that delivers unmatched expertise in digital forensics, combats child exploitation, and fosters proactive community education. The DFL/ICAC Unit developed and implemented a comprehensive Electronic Search Warrant training program for the entire Investigations Bureau. This training covered extraction review, particularity, scope, and the use of digital tools for data analysis. This training results in enhanced investigative capabilities across the bureau, increased credibility in court testimony regarding electronic evidence, and standardized practices that improve legal defensibility and operational consistency. Remarkably, the DFL is one of the few labs in the nation with no backlog, having processed 394 electronic devices and 98.99 terabytes of data in the first half of 2025 alone. Additionally, the ICAC Unit investigated 285 cyber tips during the first half of 2025 related to child sexual exploitation, resulting in numerous criminal charges for possession and transmission of exploitative material. Their work directly protects vulnerable children and brings offenders to justice. The unit also took proactive steps to prevent further exploitation by hosting a community presentation for parents on internet safety, attended by approximately 30 parents. Ed Kolodzieski, CEO of Ultra-Marine, was also recognized at the ceremony with the Community Partnership Award for his generous donation of Zodiac boats to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. Mr. Kolodzieski, a retired Marine Unit Officer with a distinguished career in both law enforcement and the private sector, has greatly supported the Marine Unit and DIVE Team’s response capabilities in local emergencies. “Today we recognize the exceptional men and women whose dedication and professionalism elevate this agency and protect our community each day,” said Sheriff Hoffman. “We are also grateful to live in a county where good people still exist and care about their community.”

The Learning Experience Partners with Make-A-Wish for Nationwide Fundraiser

Inspired by The Learning Experience's preschool philanthropy curriculum, "Let"s Grant Wishes" campaign teaches children about the importance of kindness and helping others while raising funds for Make-A-Wish April 01, 2022 // Franchising.com // Deerfield Beach, Fla. - The Learning Experience® has partnered with Make-A-Wish® Foundation as it hosts the nationwide fundraiser, Let's Grant Wishes, beginning Friday, April 1. The month-long fundraising event will take place at The Learning Experience centers with over 300 locations across the country coming together to inspire hope and grant life-changing wishes for children battling critical illnesses. Throughout the month of April, preschool children at The Learning Experience centers will learn about Make-A-Wish, the importance of kindness and helping others, and the positive difference they can make in the world when they work together. Guided by teachers and The Learning Experience's philanthropy curriculum characters "Charity Chihuahua" and "Grace the Greyhound," children will engage in philanthropic activities, participate in group projects, and create unique arts and crafts as centers and families raise donations through online fundraising pages and special events. "We are extremely proud of our lasting partnership with Make-A-Wish as we teach children across the country the value of generosity and kindness both in and out of the classroom," said Brad Wahl, Chief Brand Officer of The Learning Experience. "We look forward to bringing all of our centers, families, and communities together to inspire hope, create a meaningful impact, and grant life-changing wishes while educating children about the powerful life lesson of philanthropy." To kickoff Let's Grant Wishes in April, The Learning Experience and its "Bubbles and Friends" educational video series for kids launched a special episode dedicated to Riley Rose and The Sherman Family, who are part of The Learning Experience and Make-A-Wish families. In 2019, The Sherman's established The Riley Rose Foundation, a namesake foundation established to keep their daughter’s spirit and joy alive by funding research grants to hospitals battling childhood cancer and purchasing, filling, and maintaining Riley Rose Art Carts, which are filled with a variety of arts and crafts supplies and brought to patients who are either inpatient in the hospital or in the clinic receiving live-saving treatments. The Learning Experience's Let's Grant Wishes nationwide fundraiser is an extension of its proprietary philanthropy curriculum which was created in partnership with Make-A-Wish Southern Florida. It is dedicated to continuously educating the youngest of learners the value and application of kindness and generosity in class, at home, and in their communities. Through weekly lessons, activities, and fundraising events for nonprofit organizations, the philanthropy curriculum teaches children it doesn't matter how big or small you are, it's the size of your heart that matters. In addition to instilling powerful life lessons in children, The Learning Experience's philanthropy curriculum has helped contribute millions in monetary donations and gifts to a variety of nonprofit organizations in communities across the country, including more than $1.4 million for Make-A-Wish through its annual nationwide fundraising campaign that began in 2018. The Learning Experience CEO and Co-Founder Richard Weissman has also been a longtime board member of Make-A-Wish Southern Florida and was appointed chairman of the nonprofit organization's chapter in 2020.
