Ducklings Early Learning Center Offers Essential Summer Safety Tips for Kids

Keeping Kids Safe Outdoors: Essential Summer Safety Tips for Kids in Daycare Hooray for summer—time

Keeping Kids Safe Outdoors: Essential Summer Safety Tips for Kids in Daycare Hooray for summer—time to head outside and have some fun in the sun! By spending a few minutes learning about ways to protect your family against common seasonal hazards—from sunburn and dehydration to avoidable injuries and accidents—you can keep the good times going worry-free.Ducklings Early Learning Center provides a trusted, structured environment where outdoor safety is simply part of our year-round routine. Read on for key summer safety tips for kids in daycare, and get ready to enjoy the long days of summer!Sun Protection & HydrationOutdoor play time is one of the best parts of summer—but with the fun comes certain risks related to sun exposure and hydration for toddlers. By taking proactive steps to safeguard your child’s skin whether they’re at home or at daycare, you can avoid long-term damage and ensure a safe season for your family. 3 Effective Sun Protection StrategiesSunscreen: Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Apply it generously on your child’s skin 30 minutes before they go outside and reapply every two hours, or more often if they’re swimming or sweating. Make sure to apply sunscreen before school and send it along with your child for use throughout the day. Once they’re old enough, teach kids how to reapply responsibly.Protective Clothing: Dress your child in lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, pants, and a wide-brimmed hat. Look for clothing with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) for added sun protection.Seeking Shade: Encourage playtime in shaded areas, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM when the sun’s rays are the strongest. Use umbrellas, canopies, or trees to create shady spots in play areas and make sure your child’s school has these areas accessible.3 Hydration Tips for Kids in DaycareHydrating Snacks: Sneak in extra hydration with snacks like fresh cucumbers, watermelon, and strawberries. Increased Water Intake: Make water intake fun and easy with a reusable water bottle that kids can decorate. Remind your child to drink frequently, even if they don’t feel thirsty. Fresh tip: Infuse water with slices of strawberries or cucumbers to make it more appealing.Staying Vigilant: Look out for signs of dehydration such as dry mouth, reduced urine output, dizziness, and fatigue. If you notice any of these symptoms, ensure your child drinks water immediately and rests in a cool place. Ducklings Early Learning Center takes hydration seriously. We schedule regular water breaks throughout the day and stick to our indoor play areas when the heat is too intense. Our teachers are trained to recognize and treat signs of dehydration.Preventing Heat-Related IllnessesHeat-related illnesses in children, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, are serious concerns during summer. Knowing the difference between them and recognizing their symptoms can help prevent severe health issues. Heat exhaustion is characterized by heavy sweating, weakness, and cool, moist skin, while heat stroke symptoms include high body temperature, hot, dry skin, and confusion.Taking a few precautions and learning to be aware of and treat summer health risks is critical for both parents and daycare teachers. Be sure to ask your child’s school staff the following questions:Do you have central air or plenty of fans? What time of day do outdoor activities take place? For how long are the children outside? Are there shaded areas? Are teachers trained on summer health dangers, safety measures, and first aid related to heat-related illnesses?Know how to respond to heat-related illnesses and make sure your child’s school is well prepared in case of an emergency.Heat Exhaustion: Move the child to a cool place, remove excess clothing, and provide cool water to drink. Apply cool, wet cloths to their skin and fan them to reduce body temperature.Heat Stroke: Call 911 immediately. Move the child to a cool place, apply cold packs to their armpits and groin, and monitor their condition until help arrives. How Ducklings Encourages Safe Outdoor Play in SummerAt Ducklings Early Learning Center, our days are filled with fun opportunities for children to learn and grow. However, safety is always our top priority, with particular precautions in place for the summer months, including: Playground Safety Inspections: We regularly check playground equipment for any loose parts, sharp edges, or other hazards.Close Supervision: Our teachers always closely monitor the children during outdoor play to help prevent accidents and respond quickly if a child needs assistance, particularly during water activities.Shaded Play Areas: Trees, awnings, and portable canopies create cool spots where children can rest and play out of direct sunlight.Safe Play Instruction: Ducklings teaches children the importance of playing gently and thoughtfully—with no pushing, shoving, or climbing on unsafe structures.Boundaries and Safety Rules: We clearly communicate and reinforce safety rules, such as staying within designated play areas and avoiding restricted zones. First Aid: Our staff is fully trained in basic first aid procedures, with a well-stocked first aid kit always on hand.Water Safety: Children must learn and exhibit the rules of splash pad and pool safety, such as not running near water, avoiding rough play, and knowing how to get help in an emergency. Appropriate gear must be worn at all times.4 Daycare Summer Safety Protocols to Look ForWhen evaluating potential daycares for your child, it’s important to evaluate their approach to summer safety, which should include:Appropriate staff-to-child supervision ratios to enable teachers to keep a close watch at all timesFormalized outdoors safety protocols for all seasonsThorough emergency preparedness procedures posted throughout the school and groundsRegular communication with parents to support safety procedures and keep families informed of any concernsSummer Daycare Packing ChecklistThe change of seasons means it’s time to update the daily daycare packing list! For the warmer months, be sure to include:Sunscreen, to be reapplied by the teacher in most casesSwimsuit, if requested by the schoolExtra change of clothes, preferably loose-fitting, lighter colorsReusable water bottleWide-brimmed hatTowelSunglassesClosed-toe shoe optionA Safe, Fun Summer Starts at DucklingsAt Ducklings Early Learning Center, we waddle into summer ready to get outside and explore with our friends while learning new skills. Comment on California I-5 Mile 653 North by Jasmine McLaughlin

The rest area on I-5 northbound exit 653 (in California) is by far the cleanest rest area I have ever been to in my 41 years on this earth. The parking lot has no trash or litter, the men’s and women’s bathrooms/toilets are clean, stocked with toilet paper, has empty garbages, and the soap smells so out of this world amazing! Thank you so much to the workers – we see you and super appreciate you!!

Understanding Huntsville's Annual Budget Process

"The Finance Department is responsible for producing, monitoring, and reporting the City's annual operating budget.Fiscal ProcessThe City of Huntsville's fiscal year begins October 1 through September 30. Each spring, the City begins the annual budget process by providing City Staff members with instructions and directions for budget request preparation. In accordance with the goals and priorities that resulted from this strategic planning session, City staff then prepare their departmental budget requests. Each City department prepares a base budget request and a supplemental budget request for each of their divisions.PreparationThe base budget is the portion of the budget that provides for the continuation of operations at the current service level, taking into account the updated costs required to provide these services. The Supplemental Budget is the portion of the budget that includes new programs and personnel, new equipment, and any changes to the present level of service. Each department of the City prepares a budget that seeks to fulfill the City Council's strategic plan and long-term vision for the future of our community through every service they perform, both in daily operations and special projects and programs. Because of Huntsville's limited resources, not every budget request can be funded.ReviewThe City Manager reviews departmental budget requests and weighs them against available funding and other requests. The City Manager then presents a proposed budget to the City Council that includes recommended supplemental requests for new or expanded programs, additional personnel, new equipment, and proposed projects. The Council has the opportunity to revise the budget to conform with its objectives. Public Hearings regarding the budget and tax rate are held in July/August and open to the public.General FundThe City budget contains several different funds, with the largest being the General Fund, which is used for general government services that do not need to be accounted for separately. General government services include police protection, fire protection, park maintenance, and administrative activities. Once adopted, the budget takes effect on the first day of the fiscal year (October 1), and any major change must be approved by the City Council.Copies of the budget are available for review online or in the Finance Department office."
