Johnson City Senior Center Gets State Historical Marker
Johnson City Parks and Recreation unveiled a historical marker Friday at Memorial Park Community Center honoring the Senior Center as Tennessee's first nationally accredited senior center.
The center earned accreditation from the National Council on Aging on March 31, 2000. City leaders, staff, and senior center members gathered at the entrance for the ceremony.
The Johnson City Senior Services Advisory Council submitted a proposal to the Tennessee Historical Commission, which approved it in June 2025.
"The marker recognizes the vision, dedication, and commitment that led to this historic achievement," said Parks and Recreation Director April Norris.
Founded in 1961 at 607 E. Myrtle Ave., the center serves adults 50 and older. Tricia Korade, vice chair of the advisory council, said the marker honors the Senior Services Division's work throughout the community, not just at Memorial Park.
