Free Smoke & CO Alarms for Johnson City Residents
The Johnson City Fire Department will install free smoke and carbon monoxide alarms for qualifying residents through the state's "Get Alarmed, TN!" program.
The grant-funded initiative targets homes in Johnson City where residents lack working detectors or have alarms older than 10 years. Department personnel install 10-year sealed battery alarms at no cost. Carbon monoxide alarms require a fuel-burning appliance in the home. New construction does not qualify.
To request alarms, residents must live within Johnson City limits, occupy the home where alarms will be installed, and meet the eligibility requirements. Requests typically take six to eight weeks to process. The department does not ship devices for self-installation.
"Working smoke alarms generally cut the risk of a fatality in half compared to homes with no alarms or non-functioning alarms," JCFD Chief David Bell said.
Residents can request free alarms at www.johnsoncitytn.org/alarms or by calling the JCFD at 423-975-2840.
