JONES COUNTY – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, MS, has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Jones County, effective October 8 at 10:16 PM CDT. This alert indicates a potential for hazardous winds and significant flooding rain. Residents should act now to complete preparations.

Wind Threat: Peak wind forecasts are 10-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph, but there is a potential for winds reaching 39 to 57 mph. Damage to porches, awnings, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes is possible. Expect broken tree limbs, some downed trees, and potential road impassability due to debris. Scattered power and communications outages are also possible. Efforts to protect property should be underway now. Complete all preparations before winds become hazardous.

Flooding Rain Threat: Expect around 1 inch of rainfall, with a potential for moderate flooding. Moderate rainfall flooding may prompt evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries could become swollen, and small streams, creeks, canals, and ditches may overflow. Flooding can affect structures, and underpasses, low-lying spots, and poor drainage areas may experience rapid inundation. Driving conditions will become hazardous, with some road and bridge closures. Emergency plans should include the potential for moderate flooding. Heed any flood watches and warnings; failure to act may result in serious injury or loss of life.

Tornado Threat: The NWS indicates that the situation is unfavorable for tornadoes, and they are not expected. Little to no preparations are needed for tornadoes at this time, but remain informed of any changes to the forecast.

This Tropical Storm Watch will expire on October 9 at 6:15 AM UTC (1:15 AM CDT).
