Montgomery Academy's First GED Graduate in 6 Years
Dremikal "Dre" Baker earned his GED through the corrections education program at Montgomery County Correctional Facility, becoming the first graduate from Montgomery Academy's program in six years.
HFM BOCES Adult Literacy and Corrections Education recognized Baker during a ceremony on May 21. The program operates through a partnership between HFM BOCES and the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.
Christine Carioto, administrative coordinator of the HFM BOCES Adult Literacy and Corrections Education program, said many individuals do not remain at the facility long enough to complete the requirements. "He made the most of his time, committed to the work, and followed through on his goal," she said.
Baker created a disciplined study schedule and credited teacher Maria Mancini with providing the support he needed. His mother motivated him throughout the process.
Mancini told Baker during the ceremony that his achievement has opened doors for his future. "While some choices in your past may have led you here, they do not define who you are or what your future will become," she said.
Baker plans to attend college and pursue a business degree.
County Executive Pete Vroman, Sheriff Jeffery T. Smith, Undersheriff Carl Rust, Jail Administrator Robert Barbuti, Amsterdam Town Justice Thomas Nethaway, and HFM BOCES staff attended the ceremony.
