ADHD Manifests Differently in Women, Often Leading to Later Diagnosis

For decades, medical professionals primarily associated attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with childhood and observed its prevalence mostly in boys. However, researchers now understand that ADHD symptoms manifest differently in girls and women. Many women experience ADHD symptoms during childhood but do not receive a diagnosis until they reach adulthood.

Historically, diagnostic criteria for ADHD developed from studies predominantly involving male subjects. This focus shaped the perception of ADHD symptoms, leading to a diagnostic framework that did not always capture the experiences of girls and women.

Girls and women often exhibit less hyperactivity and more inattentive symptoms. These symptoms include difficulty focusing, disorganization, and internal restlessness. These internalizing behaviors may be less noticeable to educators and parents compared to the externalizing behaviors, such as hyperactivity, more commonly seen in boys.

The delayed diagnosis can have several implications. Women may develop coping mechanisms or internalize their struggles, leading to potential secondary conditions like anxiety or depression. Early and accurate diagnosis provides individuals access to appropriate support and management strategies. Continued research aims to refine diagnostic tools to better identify ADHD across all genders and age groups.
